The life of an acolyte, I reflected from the comfort of my bench, isn’t up to much. Presumably these men had risen early, excited for a day of saluting, and had assembled on this picturesque bridge to bask in the greater glory of Spode. And now, through no real fault of their own, save perhaps for a biddable naivety and a love of dressing up, they were trapped between a drove of grunting pigs and a phalanx of glissandoing trombones.

These acolytes were faced with a question: To flee or not to flee? To suffer the slings and arrows of a military brass section, or jump off a bridge into the rushing waters of the Severn? As yards gave way to feet, and feet gave way to inches, the question became increasingly moot. They jumped.
